All unarmed security guards in NYS are required to take an eight-hour security guard pre-employment course before they can work as security guards. This course fulfills the requirement and includes the necessary examination and paperwork to complete the materials for licensing. This is a 16-hour course structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard.
The 16-hour on-the-job program gives an overview of report writing and expands into what was learned in the prerequisite course. Topics include the role of the security guard, electronic fingerprinting, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
